Literacy is that qualitative attribute of population which is a fairly index of the

socio-economic development of the area (Chandna & Sidhu, 1980). Literacy and

education are essential for social reconstruction, improvement in the quality of life

and preparation of manpower for rapid development. According to Census of

India, a person who can read and write with understanding in any language is

treated as literate. Since the formation of Haryana as a separate state in 1966, a

considerable growth has taken place in literacy. As per Census of India

(2011),Haryana has literacy rate of 75.55 percent, which is comparatively higher

than the National average 74 percent.

The scheduled caste population, comprising of about one-sixth of the country’s

total population (16.60 per cent) lags behind the rest of population in terms of

literacy and education. The Census of 2011 revealed only 66.1 per cent of the

scheduled caste population as literate.

The Proportion of the Scheduled Caste to total population at State level is higher at

20.17 per cent as comparison to national average of 16.6 per cent in 2011 census.

The census of 2011 revealed 66.85 per cent of the scheduled caste population is

literate which is higher than National average i.e. only 66.1 per cent.

Objectives of the Study

The objective of the present study is as follows :

1.To examine the Spatial pattern of literacy among Male Scheduled Castes

population in Haryana .

Location and Extension

Haryana state came into existence as an independent state on 1st November

1966, after the reorganization of composite state of Punjab on linguistic

basis. It is located in north-western part of India .It stretches from 27°38’N

to 30°55’5” N latitudes and from 74°27’ 8” east to 77°36’5” E longitudes.

The administrative boundaries of Haryana state have been changed from

time to time due to the political conditions but the geographical and natural

boundaries of the state have remained the same. Geographically, the

boundaries of Haryana state are found in river Ghaggar in the south-west,

Siwalik hills in the north- east, River Yamuna is in the east and Aravali hills

in the south and the Thar desert in the south-west.

Regional Variations in Male Literacy among Scheduled Castes

Out of 21 District, Rewari has the highest literacy (87.46 percent) of males

and Sirsa has lowest literacy 62.45 per cent among male scheduled castes

population (Table 1.1 and Map 1.1). This displays spacious zonal diversity in the

levels of literacy among scheduled castes population within the state. Literacy is

acquired only when it has some practical use and since only the males share in

economically profitable activities.

On the basis of Male scheduled caste literacy, the District of Haryana can be
