Abstract:Land-use dynamics at the village ecosystems level are highly interlinked to the
livelihoods and anthropogenic forces as well as natural causes leading to major changes Biran
Badi is a village in Fatehabad district of Haryana. The aim of this research is: determine the pattern
of land use changes in the last 15 year and to analyze the socioeconomic changes in village Biran
Badi of Fatehabad district of Haryana. Unpublished secondary data available with village patwari
(Revenue officer) is used to analyze the changes in land use pattern.Main source of income for
villagers is agriculture. Changes in land use pattern and cropping pattern in Biran Badi village
due to various factors such as irrigation, HYV seeds, farm mechanization, Govt. policies etc has
increased the yield of cash crops (major cash crop of the area is wheat, cotton and rice) and in
return is fetching good financial returns. Thus, though the socio-economic position of the
farmers have been improved but still more is required to be done to raise their standard of
living & to meet with the day to day expenditure.
Introduction
Nature has provided the human being with different resources such as water, forests, land and
minerals etc. Land-use dynamics at finer scale such as the village ecosystem are significant as
such systems are highly dependent on the land resources (Tiwari,R. , Murthy Indu. , Kandula k.,
Bhat P.R.). In Indian conditions, agriculture is directly driven by availability of arable land and
water resources. Factors such as quality, physical properties and water holding capacities of the
soils and their management are crucial determinants of agriculture and its productivity. Land- use and land-use change is one of the determinants and often, a major consequence of
perturbations among different components of village ecosystems. Rural communities and their
livelihoods are directly dependent on the land resource, and land-use changes have far- reaching consequences in a village ecosystem with implications for major services of the
ecosystem. land is fixed resource and is of immense importance among the resources. Land can
be utilized in various ways such as for agriculture, settlement and industrial establishments. The
utilization of land depends upon is quality, physiography as well as socio economic use of

population of that particular region. Despite its immobility its uses for agriculture purposes is
highly variable. The kind use to which land is put to shows the socio economic development of
an area. In present study our emphasis is on studying the changing land use pattern in the
village (Biran Badi) during 2004-2018. The study would give the answer to question such as –
change in land use has influenced socio economic condition of village. Changing land use
pattern in the village shows a picture of changing mechanization, use of fertilizers, pesticides,
availability of irrigation facilities, capital and cheap labour from others states has proved a
blessing for villagers
Geographical setting
The village is situated in teshil Ratia of district Fatehabad (Haryana) on the bank of river Ghagar.
Its revenue no is 111.It is located at a distance of is 24 k.m from Fatehabad in the North West

from Ratia and Fatehabad towns.
Statement of Objective
1. To study the existing land use pattern of village Bira Badi
2. To investigate the changes in land use pattern in the village
3. To study the impact of changing pattern on the cultivationof other crops.
4. To study the factors that have contributed towards changes in land use and cropping
pattern
5. To study the impact of changing land use pattern on the socio- economic life of villagers
Sources of Data
The present study involves basically secondary data. The secondary data concerning land use,
cropping pattern and irrigation has been collected from revenue records of village. Such data
are recorded in lal kitab and available with patwari of the village.
Land Use Classification (in Indian context)
In India about 60 percent area is under agriculture, so rural land use of India is more important
in comparison to other countries. In India before 1950 land use was classified into five
categories but in 1951 it was changed to nine categories on the request from Food and
agriculture Organisation.FAO had directed the countries over the world to have a uniformland
use classification so that the international policies can be implemented everywhere. Table (1.1)
above shows old and new land use classification categories in India.

Land Use Pattern of Biran- Badi and changes over a time period
About 85% of village work force is involved in agriculture and remaining 15% is engaged in small
business and services. Main source of income for villagers is agriculture.Land use of village Biran
Badi is shown in the following table (1.1) and is represented through a bar diagram (1.1) clearly.
Total area of village is 1091 hectares. Out of this area under settlement is 91.5 hectares. Area
under agriculture land is 1000 hectares. At present barren land is less than one hectare.
Agriculture land use has changed. There is no forest area. Scope for increasing the area under
cultivation is negligible. Production can only be increased by increasing area sown more than
once which is just 4 percent. For this irrigation has to be extended. Only then other methods
and techniques can be adopted by farmer.

Land prices in the village are high, so people are moving outside the village. In the south of
village on khunan road a new settlement area have came into existence because here land
prices are less than inside of village. People from North West part of village also shifting to this
side because north - west area affected from Ghaghar flood every year.A new kind of change
