Educational Values of Mathematics

ABSTRACT
The educational values of mathematics each higher to the prescriptive individual then the
manufacture of things and the more solving of problems. This paper attempts to and reach
discussions about the educational value of mathematics success in solving mathematical
problems is not possible without the use of creating power of the mind. Mathematical study
trains the faculties of Discovery and invention. The solving of mathematical problem is
accomplished on the same line as the making of an invention. These days the newspapers,
journals ,magazines and bulletins carry numerous mathematical symbols and terms in their
matter. Reading of the educational values of mathematics is considered almost essential by every
person. Even if one reads for the sake of pleasure one cannot avoid coming across and grappling
with some such symbols and terms. Mathematics demands hard work from the learner.
Hardworking citizens are very much needed in any developing society. The entire atmosphere is
charged with mathematics.

INTRODUCTION
This paper issues concerning the educational values of mathematics .The study of mathematics
develops inventive faculty of the students .The solving of a difficult problem in mathematics is
just like making a discovery .The National policy on Education (1986) has also considered the

importance of mathematics in general education. The educational values of mathematics must be
clear to everyone. There are three main values of mathematics, Practical value, Disciplinary
value, Cultural value. Aim will be based on the educational values of the subject. Knowledge of
educational values helps the teacher to avoid aimlessness in teaching .Value is the spring Board
of aim and aim is the spring Board of value .At this stage ,a number of questions arises which
need to be answered .Why should everybody learn mathematics? Why should mathematics be
taught to everyone? What is the value of mathematics in any branch of education? What is the
importance of mathematics in daily life ? What shall be the advantage of devoting so much
effort, time and money to the teaching of mathematics ?What are the aims of teaching
mathematics ? How does it make any considered contribution in the development of society ? All
these questions pertain to the same except the educational values of mathematics. The
educational values in mathematics is higher to the perceptive individual then the manufacture of
things and the mere solving of problems. A grade teacher of mathematics will be interested in
finding out the answer to all these questions .This paper reviews the major elements research and
theoretical perspectives and argues for more research attention to be paid to this area.
HISTORY OF MATHEMATICS
History of mathematics has not so far been given any place in its curriculum simply because no
time can be made available for its study when the already heavy courses have to be covered.
Mathematics is a man made Science. Beginning in the 6th century BC with the Pythagoreans, the
Ancient Greeks mathematics. Around 300 B. C., Euclid introduced the axiomatic method still
used in mathematics today, consisting of definition , axioms, theorem and proof. Ancient men
also felt their concern with this branch of knowledge .Most of them made astonishing and
interesting mathematical discoveries. Babylonian mathematics begins study with the notation of
numbers. There are two Babylonian tables which exhibit the use of the letter. One of them,
probably written between 2300 and 1600 B.C., contains a table of square numbers up to 60×60.

It can be noted that the principle of position was also employed .But Babylonians did not know
the use of zero. After many centuries about 200 B.C- give a symbol for zero which denoted the
absence of a figure but apparently was not used in calculation .The sexagesimal system was
used also fractions .Babylonians possessed the knowledge of multiplication, division tables
,tables of square and square root, of geometric progression ,a few computations and the rules for
finding the area of squares triangles and right triangles .Plato got the knowledge of the number
from the Pythagoreans and the Pythagoreans from the Babylonians.
NEED OF MATHEMATICS
Mathematics play an important role in our life.
Mathematics makes our life orderly and prevents chao.
