OVERVIEW

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the highlights for telecom

subscription data for the month of May. It has been noted that the total number of telephone

subscribers has now reached 1204.98 million out of which 1180.82 million are wireless

subscriptions and 24.16 million are wireline, indicating the ever increasing demand for wireless

telephone connections. The number of active wireline subscriptions stood at 1019.55

million. The wireless broadband service also holds a major share with 273.38 million subscribers

as compared to 18.23 million wireline subscribers of the total 291.61 million broadband

subscribers.

The total number of telephone subscribers in India has seen a growth from 1198.89 million in

April’17 to 1204.98 million in May’17 showing a monthly growth rate of 0.51 per cent. Rural

subscription is growing at a steady rate rising from 502.90 million to 507.92 million during the

same period growing at 1 per cent. The telephone density in India is recorded at 93.61 per cent

with Delhi holding the highest share among all the states in the country. The wireless

subscription in urban areas increased from 675.48 million at the end of Apr’17 to 676.65 million

at the end of May’17; wireless subscription in rural areas also increased from 499.12 million to

504.18 million during the same period. The monthly growth rates of urban and rural wireless

subscription were 0.17 per cent and 1.01 per cent, respectively.

As of May 31, 2017, the private access service providers held 90.96 per cent market share of

the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSU access service providers, had a

market share of only 9.04 per cent. Here’s a look at the graph of service providers and their

Reliance Jio has added 4.78 million users in May, reveals a TRAI report. The company has

repiped down its rivals like Airtel and Vodafone by bringing the highest number of new

subscribers on its connection.

Airtel which is the largest telecom company in the country has recorded a 2.09 million of users

addition in May while the state-owned BSNL has added 1.35 million new subscribers. Vodafone

acquires the fourth position with 1.3 million, followed by Idea with 0.19 million users in May.

Telco’s received 5.37 million Mobile Number Portability requests in April. With this the

cumulative MNP requests rose from 277.72 million at the end of April, 2017 to 283.09 million at

the end of May, 2017. The number of broadband subscribers also increased in May from 284.23

million to 291.61 million. According to the report, the top five Wired Broadband Service

providers, as on May 31, 2017, are BSNL with 9.80 million users, Bharti Airtel on second with

2.09 million users, Atria Convergence Technologies with 1.20 million users, MTNL with 0.99

million and YOU Broadband with 0.64 million user base.

Jio leads in the category for wireless service providers with 117.34 million users while Airtel and

Vodafone stood second and third with 51.21 million and 40.42 million users respectively.

However, Airtel has added the highest number of subscribers to wireless service between April

to May with more than 2 million users. Jio stands behind Airtel with 171299 users. Reliance Jio

also topped the TRAI charts in April for delivering the highest download speed of 19.12

megabit per second. The company is now looking forward to its July 21 AGM meet where it is

expected to make some big announcements. There are also rumors that company may launch a

4G Volte support feature phone. The device is likely to cost under Rs 1500. In a separate story,

Jio recently revamped its existing plans above Rs 309 for its prepaid and post-paid users. The

company is now offering more data and longer validity at same prices.
