RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN DEMOGRAPHIC VARIABLES AND OCCUPATIONAL
STRESS OF EMPLOYEES IN IT

Abstract:The main aim of this study is to
find out significant effect of age, gender and
tenure on occupational stress. Non
probability convenience sampling was used
and a sample of 207 respondents working in
information technology industry has been
taken. The Occupation Stress Index was
administered and it was found that gender,
age and tenure in the organization was found
to be having statistically significant effect on
occupational stress. The detailed findings
and the implications thereon are discussed.

Introduction
In today’s fast moving world everybody is
running in order to keep up the pace. In
doing so stress becomes an integral part of
everybody life. People feel stress in all
walks of life. Whether at home or at
workplace people are stressed. Stress is

characterized as a natural boost that
influences people and can incite physical
and mental reactions. Stress in the
organization is termed as occupational stress
or in other words can be defined as stress
arising out of one’s job. Stress up to a
certain extent is necessary to keep going and
keeps employee motivated but after a certain
limit its can lead to health problems. It can
even lead to absenteeism, low productivity,
boredom and bad health of employees.
Information technology industry is an ever
dynamic industry where technology keeps
on changing in flicker of the eye. Hence in
order to keep pace with the current trends,
the employees have to keep them updated. If
not they will not be able to move ahead in
their work and hence feel unsatisfied and
bored.
Literature Review
Occupational stress refers to stress an
employee’s feel because of his job. (Rani
and Singh 2012) studied the primary
teacher’s occupational stress which was
moderate and found that there were no
differences in occupational stress with
respect to gender. Also Govt. and private
school teacher didn’t differ in their level of
stress.
(Agyemang and Arkorful 2013) studied the
impact of demographic factors on job stress
and job satisfaction of Ghanaians Customs
officer. Findings reveal that there were no
significant differences in terms of gender.
Moreover job rank had no impact on job
stress.
(Sharma and Kaur 2013) studied the impact
of age, income, length of service on stress.
The author found that above 2years age
group faced stress compared to other and
with income of more than Rs.50000
experienced more stress. Length of service
also predicted high level of stress.
(Sharma S., 2015) studied about the
demographic profiles of the Indian soldiers
and the findings of the study suggest
significant differences in designation, age,
experience and marital status with respect to
three occupational stressors, namely,
ineffective leadership style, lack of control
at work and role ambiguity. Also income
and qualification were significant for all
occupational stressors.

(Aydin O., 2018) studied the hotel
management employees in Turkey. There
were significant difference found with
respect to gender and marital status of the
employees.
Research Methodology
Research Objective: The main objective is
to study the significant impact of
demographic variables like gender, age and
tenure in the current organization on
occupational role stress.
Hypothesis of the Study
First hypothesis:
H0: There is no significant impact of gender
on Occupational role stress.
Second Hypothesis
H0: There is no significant influence of age
on Occupational Role Stress
Third Hypothesis:
H0: There is no significant impact of tenure
in current company on Occupational Role
Stress.
Importance of the study: This study will
contribute to a better understanding of the
stress which the employees feel in the
organization respect to these variables and
further it can be useful in knowing how
managing role stress can help in retention of
employees in the organization.
The scope of the study includes employees
working at various levels in IT companies of
Pune and Gandhinagar/Ahmedabad.
Sampling technique used is Non- probability convenience sampling.
The sample includes 207 participants of IT
companies in Pune. Out of 207 respondents,
42% are female and 58% are male. Of total
207 respondents, 12.6% respondents are
between 20 to 24 years, 26.1% respondents
are between 25 to 29 years, 26.1%
respondents are between 30 to 34 years,
16.4% respondents are between 35 to 39
years, 7.2% are between 40 to 44 years,
6.8% respondents are between 45 to 49
years and 4.8% respondents are above 50
years. Moreover out of 207 samples, 10.6%
respondents have worked with current
company for less than 1 year, 16.4%
respondents have worked with current
company from 1year to 2 years, 25.1%
respondents have worked with current
company from 3 years to 5 years, 23.2%
respondents have worked with current
