Abstract

The history of agriculture in India dates back to the early years of Indus valley civilization in the country. Being a civilizational occupation India has always been an agrarian economy with around 60 percent of its population directly or indirectly associated with farming. Although it was as late as 1960s that India improved its agronomic technology and overcame the chronic food deficit after the Green Revolution. The state of Punjab turnedto be the undisputed leader in the Green Revolution which made India self-sufficient in this field.
