Abstract

The aim of this brief review is to describe the current principal trends in biotechnology used for marker gene removal, concentrating on the most recent and promising innovations in this technology. In many plant transformation systems, antibiotic resistance genes are used as selectable markers. Following transformation, the continued presence of the plant selection marker gene becomes unnecessary and may also be undesirable. The development of new technologies for receiving markerless gene knockout genotypes with high biological safety is a necessary task.
