Abstract

The main purpose of this study was to identify factors affecting teaching and learning writing skills in secondary schools with reference to selected schools in Hawassa City Administration, Ethiopia. To achieve this objective, the researcher employed a descriptive design. For the study, 236 grade eleven and twelve students and 22 English language teachers from these grade levels were made to fill in close-ended questionnaires. The students were selected using systematic random sampling; the English language teachers were selected through cluster sampling. Moreover, a semi-structured interview was held with 12 students among those who had filled in a questionnaire and with the 12 English language teachers. Quantitative and qualitative data were obtained and analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively.
