Abstract
The Indian Himalayan Region (IHR) is one of India's most ecologically sensitive regions, facing increasing pressure from urbanization, tourism, infrastructure development, and resource exploitation. These challenges have raised concerns regarding the sustainability of developmental activities in the region. This study examines the relevance of carrying capacity as a tool for assessing sustainability thresholds in the Indian Himalayan Region. Based on secondary data and a review of relevant literature, the study develops a multidimensional carrying capacity framework incorporating environmental, demographic, economic, infrastructural, and institutional dimensions. The study argues that sustainability in the Himalayan region cannot be understood through ecological factors alone but requires an integrated assessment of socio-economic and governance-related factors. The framework provides a holistic approach for evaluating developmental pressures and supporting sustainable regional planning. The study highlights the need for balanced development strategies that promote economic progress while maintaining ecological integrity and long-term regional resilience.
