Abstract
One of the issues affecting efficiency of workers in Nigeria is the issue of the reward system by employers. Some have argued that non financial reward systems inspire workers more than financial reward systems. This study attempted to examine this issue with a focus on Government Technical Colleges in Ondo and Ekiti states in Nigeria. A well designed system for rewarding labour greatly has an impact on the efficiency of employees and the organisation as a whole. This study focuses on the impact of financial and non-financial reward on efficiency of employees. The descriptive survey method was adopted for the study. The staff and students of Government Technical Colleges in Ondo and Ekiti States were the population for this study. A total of 290 respondents were selected from 10(ten) technical colleges for the study using simple random sampling. The researcher made use of questionnaire for data collection. The data generated were analyzed using percentages and mean analysis. The result revealed that employees are influenced to work effectively by financial reward more than non-financial reward. Based on the findings of the study, it could be concluded that financial rewards improve the quality of work and encourage workers to work towards the achievement of the goals of the institution. It is therefore recommendedthat management of Government Technical Colleges should provide good working environment to its employees, this will definitely facilitate improved workers’ efficiency.
