Abstract
Living species on Earth may number anywhere from 5 million to 50 million or more. Although we have yet to identify and describe most of these life forms, we know that many are endangered today by development, pollution, over-harvesting, and other threats. Earth has experienced mass extinctions in the past due to natural causes, but the factors reducing biodiversity today increasingly stem from human activities. Loss of Biodiversity occurs when all species are wiped out and when the delicate link in the chain that is vital for all is broken. Decline in biodiversity is occurs when natural habitat is destroyed. As a result, any given specie may not get any alternate habitat nor migrate elsewhere. Consequently the entire species meet extinction as happened with Royal Tigers in protected forest in Sunderban in India. It also occurs due to direct harvesting. Man for his food and pleasure slaughter these species. Since this process cannot be curbed, these species are being wiped out. At many places Whale is being slaughtered. It is very likely that Whale may face extinction in the years to come. The study explains the causes of loss or decline of diversity.
