Abstract
The work used geospatial techniques (Geographic Information System, and Remote Sensing) to assess Land Use/Cover in River Ominla Catchment. Digital Elevation Model of the area from Shuttle Radar Thematic Mapper (SRTM) wasused to delineate the study area. The multi-date satellite imageries, Landsat TM 1986, Enhanced TM + of 2000 and 2015 were subjected to supervised classification to detect spatial temporal change. Results showed significant change since 1986 to 2015. Built-up increased by 3.70% in 1986-2000 and 6.32% in 2000-2015. Undisturbed forest decreased by 32.08% in 1986-2000 and 19.26% in 2000-2015. Shrub land increased by 3.30% in 1986-2000 and 9.25% in 2000-2015. Disturbed forest increased by 25.54% in 1986-2000 and decreased 2.05% in 2000-2015. Bare surface reduced by 1.13% in 1986-2000 and increased 2.91% in 2000-2015. Cultivation increased by 67% in 1986-2000 and 2.84% in 2000-2015.Built-up was negatively correlated with undisturbed vegetation with r = -0.957 and p = 0.095; positively correlation with shrub land with r = 0.993 and p = 0.037; positively correlated with disturbed vegetation with r = 0.735 and p = 0.237;positivelycorrelated with cultivation with r = 0.98 and p = 0.062 all at α = 0.05 respectively. Therefore, the study concluded that there was significant change in River Ominla catchment and that this requires urgent attention.
