1. Introduction
Television is one of the most interactive
medium of communication. In today’s world
whether it is a child or an old man, everyone
has some or the other favourite shows on
television. Also due to the up gradation of
technology television is no more a
commodity which is owned by only the
urban sector. Today’s T.V presents variety
of programmes like daily soaps, kids
programs, reality programs e.t.c. It is
observed that during the prime time to
increase the TRP’S the producers, portray
those shows which are most viewed and in
present time different reality shows takes
lead.
Many people would say that reality T.V shows
have a corrupting influence on the minds of
youth, Reality shows, which make up 67% of
all television shows, definitely have an
influencing role on the behaviour of teens.
Almost all of these shows express extensive
profanity, sexual references, drugs, alcohol, and
an overall lack of appropriate behaviour. Since
reality T.V. is believed to be true life, people
come to expect that the things that they watch
on the shows will happen to them in real life.
Many teenagers admit that they believe acting
negatively and offensively towards other
people are normal for a teenager.
Young people are most dependent on the
media as a source of information when they
lack personal experience and interpersonal
advice in the area they are seeking knowledge.
The songs in our music industry form a
mindset that is later put into action when an

opportunity arises. This is in consonant with
the theory of modelling, which states that
individuals perceive a form of behaviour
portrayed by a mass media character. They
find this behaviour attractive for imitation in
some personal situation. The perceived
behaviour is reproduced by individuals when
situation arises. Entertainment content
depicting sexual norms, stereotypes, double
standards and sexual roles may have profound
influence on teens’ perception about sex, body
image and social norms (Garner et al. 1998).
Television’s consistent images and portrayals
construct a specific portrait of reality.
Gradually, viewers come to cultivate or adopt
attitudes and expectations about the world that
coincides with this portrait. In this regard,
profane lyrics have an impact on youth’s sexual
attitude. In a country where parents and schools
remain reluctant to discuss sexual topics,
adolescents look to the media (television) to
find out about the world, in their own language
and from their own point of view. They
generally accept what they see on the television
as real because they have nothing to tell them
otherwise (Chapin, 2000). Most of the studies
on media effects focus on unintended effects.
They suggest that media are created for
pleasure and entertainment without
consideration of the consequences. They also
suggest that there are unintentional and
intentional influences that result from media.
The unplanned ones come from content that is
produced in an effort to attract and retain big
audiences (Jennings Bryant and Dorina Miron,
2002). The relationship between reality
television and the influence it has on its
viewers. The content of television programs
does have a significant impact on the mindset
and attitudes of the respondents. Television has
become an important communication medium
and means for retrieving current news and
information. Viewers are using television
programs as educational tools, “this finding is
indeed very important and the government,
policy makers as well as television producers
and directors should consider broadcasting
more television programmes which are more
educational in nature, especially in terms of
inculcating good moral values in the respective
television programmes as a means of educating
on certain important issues and simultaneously,
positively influencing the mindset of the
viewers (Osman, 2010).
