Abstract

Tea industry of India is one of the oldest industries in plantation economy having its root in British colonial period. Since then the industry has been growing subjected to changed socio- economic circumstances of early independence and then trade liberalization era. These changed circumstances in turn left its marks on the pattern of labour recruitment as well as their welfare. In this context, the paper seeks to review the pattern of labour recruitment and their welfare in various stages. The focus will be on women workforce of Assam that comprises more than fifty percent of the total workforce. Moreover, the state of Assam also bears immense prominence because it produces more than half of the country’s total tea production.
