Abstract
The Partition of India into the sovereign nations of India and the Islamic Republic of Pakistan in 1947 was the culmination of the British rule in India. The colonizers had decided to leave India but not before putting the final nail in the coffin of our great nation the nail of divide along the lines of religion. This decision of a few leaders of the political parties had led millions of people displaced, killed and separated from their families and torn away from their motherland.Nevertheless, what is to be understood is that the Partition of 1947 was nothing less than a massacre a bloodbath wherein agony, loss, anger, disease, rape, mutilation, inter-communal violence, all raged on for days with little or no relief. These horrific scenarios can either be known from our history books or the partition narratives that were written after India and Pakistan were separated. While there are a lot of narratives on the atrocities and violence of the partition itself, few of them focus exclusively on the women the physical trauma along with oppression and constant humiliation. But, what is to be understood and deciphered is that the body of a woman is itself a site of war. It is the ultimate symbol of chastity.
