Abstract
This project explores a principle considered by me as a researcher to be at the heart of the architecture of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), namely complementarity. The balance between the sovereignty of states to prosecute alleged perpetrators of international crimes and the development of an autonomous and independent judicial institution, the principle of complementarity is here approached from a critical point of view. The researcher focuses in particular on the situations of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya and Ivory Coast, according to recent developments in the decisions rendered to date.
