Abstract
It is important to realize whether or not an individual student’s demographic similarity with other students shape his or her attitude. Relational demography on the other hand identifies the degree to which an individual student’s demographic characteristics are shared by other student’s within social units such as a classroom. As per the study conducted by Tsui (1992) and Tajfel (1978), relational demography is closely related to Social identity and Self-identity. Turner (1987), proposed the self-categorization theory wherein individuals classify themselves and others into social units based on demographic characteristics.
The purpose of this paper is to understand the significant demographic characteristics which motivate students to become part of a social unit and the extent to which these demographic characteristics have an impact on the student attitudes.
