Abstract
Travel writing on medieval India has largely focused on Mughal India while the borderlands of Mughal India have been ignored. This paper argues that there is sufficient material in the travel writings on Mughal India that represents the borderlands. Therefore, the paper proceeds to locate Ralph Fitch (1550-1611 AD) and his representations of eastern India and the borderlands of the Mughal Empire based on his writings. This paper argues that Ralph Fitch was a pioneer in many ways particularly in writing about the borderlands of the eastern Himalayas.
