Abstract

Across the world, adopting a disabled friendly strategy in design, construction and operation of hotels has resulted in enhanced turnover, profitability, customer goodwill, repeat customers and brand value. A qualitative method was adopted using both secondary data and primary data collected from 30 five-star hotels in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. This research found that most hotels in India are not disabled friendly. Staff do not know how deal with disabled guests. Hotel layouts are not disabled friendly. Rooms are fitted out in a manner that is inconvenient to the disabled. This suggest that hotels will need to use a design considers the needs of disabled persons, reserve some of their rooms specially for these guests and create a hotel / room design that is more accessible to such persons.
