Abstract

Neuropathic pain (NP) is a prevalent neurological disorder that causes damaging of nerves. It mainly affects somatosensory system including both central neurons as well as peripheral fibers. Nerves over-sensitization causes extreme pain from stimuli which are normally painless. NP can be classified into central neuropathic pain (CNP), peripheral neuropathic pain (PNP), and general neuropathic pain (GNP). PNP includes diabetic peripheral neuropathy, HIV-associated NP, post-herpetic neuralgia, chemotherapy associated peripheral neuropathy, post-traumatic or postoperative peripheral neuropathy. CNP includes pain of spinal cord injury, post stroke neuropathic pain or the pain of multiple sclerosis and GNP includes both PNP and CNP. Neuropathic pain affects around 7 to 10 % of the common public globally. As per the recent reports NP is more persistent in women i.e. about 8% as compared to men i.e. about 5.7%.The most common symptoms of neuropathic pain include “sensations (burning, tingling, ants, crawling etc.), spontaneous pain, numbness or loss of sensation, allodynia (a general non-painful stimuli like touch can cause pain, hyperalgesia (Slightly painful stimuli causes exaggerated pain).
