Abstract
The term “Northeast” represents different interpretations to scholars. Is this really a homogenous category or rather going to homogenize this region as Northeast India, or India’s northeast. There are no such region, which can be justified either by any affinity among its individual parts or by culture, political history, languages, social structure or economic ties. At present, there are seven contiguous states and one detached state comprising as a whole combination of eight states. There are different communities/tribes are living in these states. Their way of life, traditions and cultures are different from each other, which reflects their existence from the ancient period. They are not the newly established one, but in that period existential identity was not sharpened as in today’s context. The different incidents of different times have been continuously impacted on it. Hence, everyone has become conscious about their identity, culture, tradition etc. which they don’t want to compromise in any situation with others. Each of the region’s distinct parts requires for its problems and aspirations. In today’s context, concerning on developmental issues, administrative purpose, and northeast is referred as homogenized identity. Thus, the tendency of distinguishing one from others is also growing due to fear of loss of identity of particular communities for creation of a larger identity. The myth of creating “unity in diversity” has become very difficult in these days. Hence, this paper examines how the term has been evolved in different times and its consequences to the present context.
