Abstract

Friendships define us. At certain stages, friendships are everything and the most important strength in everyone’s lives. It grows and changes as people come and grow. It is incredibly important. It is a two way street of give and take and built on trust, loyalty and empathy. It needs friends like water and soil to grow healthy and strong. Friends help to celebrate good times and provide support during bad times. They prevent loneliness and give chance to offer needed companionship too. Friendship thus becomes an important element in fulfilling one’s survival and growth needs. Relationships are like elevators. Like any other relationships, friendship also falls into rut sometimes lack of trust and sharing. Friendship occurs from childhood and develops only at young adulthood. Many young adult fiction writers of coming age novels have talked the theme of friendship among teenagers to analyse the combination of developmental changes and sex differences.  African American literature has been remarked its stamp in tracing the juvenile fiction during 1960’s and 1970’s. It was an era of youth movement in America.
