Abstract

Overview: The study delves into the current state of democracy and governance practices across African nations, analyzing the progress and challenges faced by various countries in achieving democratic ideals.

Body of Knowledge: The study explored the complex interplay between political institutions, civil society, and the rule of law, highlighting both advancements and setbacks in democratic governance. It examined key indicators such as electoral processes, political participation, transparency, and accountability, while also considering the impact of economic development, social inequality, and external influences on democratic practices.

The study was conducted in 4 institutions; 2 governments and 2 civil society organizations. The target population for the study was 800 with a sample size of 80 respondents. Qualitative data collected from semi-structured interview schedules and focus groups was analyzed thematically in line with research themes; while data generated from the questionnaires and surveys were analyzed using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and Microsoft Excel (version 16) to come up with charts, and graphs.

Results: The findings indicated that many African nations still struggle with issues such as political corruption, weak institutions, limited press freedom, and human rights violations. The study highlighted the disparity in governance quality across the continent, with some countries exhibiting commendable progress while others remain entrenched in authoritarian practices. Additionally, the findings underscore the critical role of civil society, regional organizations, and international partnerships in promoting democratic principles and holding governments accountable.

Recommendation: The study calls for sustained efforts to strengthen democratic institutions, enhance transparency, and foster inclusive governance to achieve meaningful and lasting progress in the regions.
