Abstract

Politics of exclusivism refers to a deliberate calculated political immorality that often results in a complete socio-political, economic, psychological, cultural as well as organizational powerlessness of a people in a given society. It is derived from the dominant ethnic group that constitute the nucleus of its establishment and found expression in a deliberate marginalization and disempowerment of some regions within a given political society militarily, politically, economically and even socially by the dominant ethnic group from either having access to and or taking outstanding control of national key positions and public resources. This paper attempts an assessment of the trends and prospects of the politics of exclusivism in Nigeria political firmament under President Buhari’s government. Using the human needs theory as its framework of analysis, this study reveals that there is a positive correlation between President Buhari’s politics of exclusivisms and the prevailing socio-economic and political inertia in the country, as well as the recurrent security quandary. Based on the basic tenets of this theory the study is premised on the view that until the significance of inclusive politics and true representative governance is realized by the political elites in Nigeria, the challenges will continue. It therefore recommend a review of the present status-quo.
