Abstract
This paper explores the oral literature and lifestyle of the Banjara community in Telangana, known for their vibrant cultural traditions. The Banjara, also called Lambadi or Gypsy, have a rich oral tradition that includes folk songs, stories, proverbs, and chants. These traditions are central to their cultural identity and daily life.
The paper starts with a look at the Banjara community’s history and way of life, including their migration patterns and social organization. It then examines their various forms of oral literature, such as Lavani and Keertan songs, folktales, and proverbs, and explains how these reflect their values and lifestyle.
The impact of modernization and globalization on Banjara traditions is also discussed. Urbanization, education, and technology are changing how these traditions are practiced and passed down. Despite these challenges, there are ongoing efforts within the community to preserve and revive their oral heritage.
The study also compares Banjara oral traditions with those of other indigenous groups to highlight similarities and unique aspects. The paper concludes by emphasizing the importance of preserving Banjara cultural practices for future generations and the broader cultural diversity of India
