Abstract

The forts of Maharashtra form one of the most significant architectural, cultural, and historical landscapes in India. Built across diverse ecological zones—coastal belts, forested highlands, and the rugged Sahyadri mountains—these forts reflect a strategic evolution shaped by geography, political necessity, and the martial traditions of various dynasties. Among these, Raigad stands out not only as a military marvel but as the symbolic heart of Maratha sovereignty under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. This paper examines the historical development of forts in Maharashtra, categorizing their architectural and functional characteristics across time, and analyzes how ecological conditions influenced their construction. It then presents an in-depth study of Raigad Fort, focusing on its planning, defensive systems, architectural features, socio-administrative structures, and its central role in shaping the Maratha Empire.
